Following the rumor last week that Michael Bay was in talks with his Pain And Gain star Mark Wahlberg to take the lead in the fourth live-action Transformers film, the director announced at his website today that a deal was reached.
“Mark is awesome. We had a blast working on “Pain and Gain” and I’m so fired up to be back working with him. An actor of his caliber is the perfect guy to re-invigorate the franchise and carry on the Transformers’ legacy,” said Bay.
As I stated when the rumor began, this can only be a good thing for the franchise. Wahlberg is an Oscar nominee, which brings some gravitas to the franchise. As to what sort of character he might play, there aren’t a whole lot of source-material options that he fits. It’s been said that he will play a father to another character that will carry the franchise into future installments, so it’s very likely that his character will be created especially for these films. It’s certainly been done before.
Transformers 4 is due summer of 2014.
